is this harmless to my files? bcoz i have to run an application but it says that i have to extract all files and i am afraid that it might damage my other files in my desktop. i need an answer pls.

Files that need to be extracted are compressed so they take up less space. You can't read a file that's been zipped up or compressed, because it's been changed somewhat. So, to read them, or use them, you must extract them from their compressed format. This is normal, and perfectly safe. Compression is done typically to files you download off the web, or files you're storing on a disk or cd to save space.

You can only extract compressed files (usually .zip, .rar or .cab files).
Extracting means that the individual files within the single compressed file will be saved somewhere outside the compressed file in its original format.

This will not hurt the computer in any way unless one of the files contain a virus. Make sure you have an up-to-date anti-virus software before extracting any unknown file.
