I have been having a problem with Dogs coming onto my property and threatening my calfs, which are pretty much defenceless against dogs. I have I gun licence and am a member of a Hunting club with my own registered guns, I also have permission to shoot on my property.

l'm in Australia, if that helps.

There are signs on a public road near my home that warns "Dogs harassing livestock will be shot," so it might be legal where you are. I'd start checking your local laws, and work up. Maybe some signs warning area dog owners of your intention will give the offenders the right idea.

I would never threaten your calf, but I would like to lick it's nose.

First - check your laws. Live in city/county boundaries? If it is permissible (and i'm sure they'll tell you you 'can't' shoot their owners which has been a bane to many of us for years), might try what my husband got for me. I use a Ruger .22 and use what we call snake loads. They are CCI 22 long rifle shotshell ammo. 1/15 oz. # 12 shot (approx. 165 pellets). They are so tiny they sting from a distance but don't kill and unless you are right on top of the animal, you shouldn't put a hole in them. I've shot cats/dogs and they yip and I never see them again. I've checked closely and have 'never' found even a drop of blood. It's an alternative that scares but doesn't (hasn't for me) ever killed or maimed. Depending on how close you are, chances are a pellet won't even stay in the skin as it falls out and doesn't imbed in the skin after it hits (stings) while the animal is running away. For you people out there that is unfamiliar with shot - #12 is about the size of a "sharpened" pencil lead. Actually it's about the size of the period at the end of this sentence if you cut it in half.

It is not legal here in the states. I would not risk losing your license or your guns if I were you. We have cattle and I would not shoot a dog unless it was attacking one of the cows or calves. We have trouble occasionally with coyotes here. We occasionally will have a pack of dogs run through but they normally do not bother the cows. A stray might run one but they usually do not attack the cattle.
The person that is shooting them with a small caliber is wrong because it can lodge in the skin and cause infections. These dogs are usually weakened by hunger and disease anyway. If the shot is that small it might not leave visible blood.

I was just reading some of the answers and some of them apparently have never lived in the country. I do not know about Australia but here we do not have the luxury of animal control. They only exist in the city. Rural areas do have them here.

I would highly dobut it. Unless the dogs are actually harming the cattle it would probably be considered animal cruelty and possible gun law violations. I would ask the local prosecution, they're the ones who'd charge you. Getting an opinion from them would offer some backing.

USA here and yes here in the states the law states we can protect our person and property and if anyone comes onto our property to harm a person or element (animals too) yes we can use deady force which means using a weapon. Do research in your area about your laws, you should find that on the web. goodluck ,mia

You should try to contact some sort of animal control agency. You may want to try shooting the gun up towards the sky, and try scaring them off. I'd consult your local law agency as far as the legal stuff goes.

In such case I think you can shoot the dogs, but it will be better to make some wall to protect your calfs.

I don't like you. I understand the concern for your calfs...but I agree with the "shoot the owner' advise. It's not the dogs fault.
