Exercise it. Make yourself memorize something everyday - like a poem, or a grocery list. As you get better, increase the size or complexity of what you're memorizing. Once you feel you've gotten that ability down, start using the same mindset on everyday things - you'll listen better and retain more information because you'll know how to keep it. Give it a try.

Our unconscious brains remember EVERYTHING that our senses have received. Problem is, sensory input is filed away in an instant and if we aren't paying focused, conscious attention at that exact moment, we have trouble locating those files at a later time. The secret to better memory is better attention skills. Here's a silly little game that sounds inadequate. But, it REALLY works to build focus and attentiveness: Two people sit facing each other with knees almost touching. Try to stare at each other without breaking eye contact AND without blinking for as long as you can. First one to divert eyes or blink loses the game. Do this often for just one week and you won't believe the improvement in your memory.

Many researches have been made on this subject. To me, the best way of remembering is through association. You need to associate every event/thing that you want to remember with certain other things, which are ordinarily etched in your mind or with some architecture having a sequence of designs, so as to enable you to remember those things in that order of sequence.
Further, it has also been proved that meditation/yoga helps in remembering things.

Practice, use memory games to help. Try writing down a list of three or four things and writing that list down again in an hour or two without looking at the original. When you start getting it right start to expand your list of items , over time you will see improvement. Hope this helps ;)

I suggest you get a board. Then, get used to looking at it everyday before you go somewhere no matter what! Then, everyday, you stick notes on it. You stick anything you need to remember on it. Then, you'll see it! If you'd like, stick it on your head after the board and it'll make you look like a fool, but then again, you'll see every single note you'll need.
