I am having a dvd rewriter put into my computer later on today, does this mean that i can now download.avi files, or do I still have to download mpg or mpeg files, but can now copy them to dvd instead of cd rewriter?

the dvd re writer will only burn files that you already have on your computer - you will still need to download music and video files ...

You can download any video file types you want. What software comes with the DVD drive is unknown, so it's support is unknown. There is a lot of burning software that supports wide ranges of file types. And if your chosen burning software doesn't support a particular type, you can just convert it to a type that is supported.

No problem.
