Your external appearance is important because that is what humans see first! From a distance, what do others see about you? Before you open your mouth, during your first meeting, all any one has, of you, is what they see. And if that turns off society, what you have to say will never be heard. Nor will anytime be given to you so that you can make your case for your inner self.
How many people have you dismissed, that you had never meet,, because you did not like the way they looked?
The litmus test for males are females.

In either case, you will never get in if they do not like what they see. That is why your grandmother tried to teach you to always dress decently!

This is a shallow world.
Okay, most people care about appearances because that it the very first impression that people will create.
If you look good on the outside, people will tend to want to know you better internally.

"Everyone" doesn't. I think the more intellectual a person is the less importance they put on aesthetics. Besides, it's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what's beautiful to you may not be so for me.
