To clear up a mis-conception, Stargate was not "almost cancelled". The series contract ran out after 5 years, but was renewed again for the 6th season. Based on the poor reception Corin Nemec's character Jonas received, Showtime decided not to renew it for another year. SciFi, however, decided to pick up the show for a year under condition that Michael Shanks return as Daniel Jackson. (Each subsequent season has been renewed based on the continued success of the series... in fact, all the principal actors have signed on for an 11th season of the show contingent on SciFi renewing it again this fall.)
In the case of X-Files, David Duchovny left the show to pursue other ventures, and was not interested in returning full-time. I'm not sure why FOX even considered cancelling Family Guy, as the network has always done well with prime time cartoons (*cough* Simpsons *cough*)... other than to make room for more reality shows.
Firefly, however, was a case of FOX just being stupid and wanting that time-slot for (you guessed it) more reality shows. Deep Space 9 (also shown on FOX) was a case of Paramount having it's brain set on the seven-year curse. (It could easily have gone a few years more.) X-Files surpassed the seven year curse so that's all they needed, right?
*shakes head in disgust*
As for Gillian Anderson, I liked her cool-headed Scully when Duchovny's Mulder got carried away with his theories. I never really had much of an opinion on her, however, as I wasn't a regular viewer of the show.

After The X Files finished, Gillian Anderson starred in an adaptation of Charles Dickens's Bleak House. She played Lady Dedlock.
Watch out for a movie called No One Gets Off In This Town coming sometime soon. Gillian Anderson has a part in it.

Gillian Anderson is pregnant, I read that in Sunday's Parade mag.
She played in a movie not too long ago on PBS

Gillian Anderson looked like a Dental Hygenist I had. You can guess I enjoyed getting my teeth cleaned. I do miss Gillian :(

She's still around. She now lives in London, England and was in the adaptation of Charles Dickens' Bleak House on the BCC here in Britain.

I do. She was really the reason I started to watch the X Files. She looks so much like my niece. I wonder what she does these days.

I understand your sadness. I don't particulary miss Ms. Anderson, but I hate when they take off the air the good shows.

Can't say I myself miss her, as I never got into the X-Files, but she is quite attractive. I believe she is currently pregnant, or about to squirt one out soon, last I read.

I do miss her. I miss a lot of the cast.
But, thankfully, I can see some of them on Stargate now!
Skinner (Caldwell) , Scully's dad (Hammond), Cigarette Smoking Man (Prior Damaris). . .
ahhh...the incestuous ring of sci-fi television....
