LORNE GREENE invented a stopwatch that could run backwards. It was designed to provide a countdown timer that on-air newsmen could use to pace themselves during the closing seconds of a segment.

The Vikings invented the stopwatch.
It is derived from name of the ancient hero Sto P. Watch who was charged with the perilous duty of timing the speed of the viking boats during their assaults on Icelandic penguins.
Speed was very important as the penguins could escape from slow boats.
