My 74 VW beetle overheated, the hole is too big for a Heli-coil.

Is there anything that works better than JB weld to get the spark plug to stay in?

I know that it's a jalopy rig, I'm just looking for something to make it run, not so much quality at that.

Thanks

Removing the head and having it welded at a machine shop is your best bet. They can weld the hole closed, re-drill, and then re-tap the hole making it good as new. This is the "correct" way. If the hole is oversize and air escapes the combustion chamber at all during operation, the hole will continue to get larger until it is un-repairable. JB weld will not hold up to heat and the pressure associated with heads. Good luck !

If your plug hole is so big that a helicoil will not fit, the best thing you could do is buy a new piston and cylinder. Check out JC Whitney, they sell piston/jug sets for pretty cheap. JB weld is not going to have the strength to hold up to the heat and compression.

I had this same problem, I just used plummers tape. It is still working now, just pull out the plug and wrap plummers tape around the treads and put it back in, it will keep it in and there is no need to re-tap the hole. Give it a shot, you'll see it works

try for a bigger plug? try using the tape seal to seal the threads... call 1-800-LET-NAPA and ask them.. they can advise and tell you where the closest NAPA store is to your location.
