Extremely hypocritical - - - many pretend that it does not exist when in fact it does - - - many tolerate the notion of a MAN doing it to a Boy - - - the boy is expected to take it - - - but if a Man expresses actual love & feelins & reciprocates with another Man then he is condemn. Many men will do it and blame Devils & Evil Spirits. Oddly enough the Muslim & Hindu Indians are the most anti gay while the Christians tend to be more tolerant than their American Cousins. The Budhists are usually the friendliest viewing sex are a private matter left to the individual. There is a lively gay scene in New Delhi and Calcutta and Bombay but much fear beneath the surface. Rumor suggests police are disinclined to resolve crimes against gay people.

Like many other societies that are undergoing the change from traditional modes of living to lifestyles that approximate other parts of the global community, India has a variety of "gay" scenes - some traditional, some like "gay" life in other countries. And the reaction is varied, religious communities in India do not accept alternative sexualities any more than religious communities in the U.S. do. All that having been said, here are some sites where you can get a feel for the variety of gay scenes in India:
1) "modern" gay cultures - to begin with in the large cities, in the universities, there is a gay life that approximates gay life in L.A.. Tokyo or Amsterdam, bars and clubs, professors researching a "gay" past, magazines and films
A standard overview of gay life in India

A number of Indian activists and academics discuss the meaning of "gay" in India

trikone started out as a gay magazine, it now maintains a web site for all of south Asia http://www.trikone.org/
And we can't expect the world's largest film industry to stay off the gay bandwagon, Bollywood's view of being gay in India

2) There are traditional cultures that include people that would be labeled GLB&T within the world culture. yet most of these sexual cultures go far back in the local history and do not think in terms of sexual identities - but in terms of activities
Hirjas are a "third sex" community in South Asia. Transgendered performers, they are hired to sing and dance at weddings and namings. Although their origin is vague, there is some historical evidence to suggest 4,000 year history.

There is a long history of depictions of "gay' sexualities in both temple sculptures and in the Islamic minaturist schools. This indicates a long tradition of same-sex bonding that has long been ignored

When you look over all of the various sites and information about "gay" scenes in India, the over all feeling is of a culture that is beginning to "accept" alternative lifestyles and because of this, rediscovering the history of sexualities within their own culture.
I hope this helps.

it is treated as abnormal... even a friend of mine, who is not gay but was gang-raped by a bunch of guys - the police didn't want to take care of it because they considered him "gay", and claimed that he enjoyed the rape. however, i do believe that there *is* some kind of support there for glbt people. there is also the "third sex", the hijras, that are a very interesting thing i recommend reading up about.
