This question always comes up when the value of metals rise.
There is discussion to stop making them again.
It currently cost 2.5cents for each penny produced. Denver Mint, July 2006.
Many people do not even bother to pick them up.
If pennies were removed, your sales tax will be rounded up to the nearest 5 cents. That would mean a windfall of tax for many government agencies. Are you willing to pay it?

The cost of the copper to produce one penny now exceeds it's value and this is probably why there are rumors of stopping it's production. Think of how often you would pay for an item and not be able to recieve the correct amount of change without the penny.

No. I have gotten new pennies. They cost more than a penny a piece, though, to make. So they take in old pennies, melt them down and re-purchase the copper at a higher rate, so they keep making money off the same copper, over and over, it's a racket. Something like that...

I don't think so but I know it has been up for debate for a while. It does cost more than a penny for the gov. to make a penny but I thought I read all the coins cost more than there value to make.
