homecoming means just that. the school sport team, usually football, has their awy game then they have the homecoming game.it varies from school to school, but it is usually followed by a somewhat formal dance at the school. most of the team members are thought to be the best date for the homecoming dance by the more popular girls, but that really isn't true. but if asked, a long dress, and a corsage provided by the boy is usually worn by the girl, and a suit and tie by the boy. it really is fun, and is held every year, usually in the fall so it coincides with the football schedule. some girls, and boys , go stag, that is without a date, but most are asked well in advance. in some areas, there is also a parade in the afternoon and the whole school may be involved, as well as the faculty and town residents.

Homecoming is an annual tradition observed by many North American towns, high schools and colleges, usually in late September or October. Its purpose is to welcome back former residents and alumni, and is built around a central event, such as a banquet, football game, basketball game, or a ice hockey game.
Throughout the week, schools (particularly high schools) engage in special dress-up days, where students are allowed to wear clothing suitable to the theme (e.g., toga day, nerd day). Students traditionally wear clothing with their school's name, or clothing and makeup of their school's colors on Friday.
