From my studies, Egyptian culture is older than 5000 years, and humanity has only been around for about 6000 years.. I wouldn't say Egyptian culture was the first, but they were certainly the best at it.. and, like most things, it probably evolved over the years..

in general, as long as there's been plants and women, there's been women using the plants for beautification..

in the Middle Ages in Europe, ppl stopped wearing cosmetics because they associated it with those who were pagan, and not Christian. there was a big push toward pure living, laying aside everything that wasn't necessary, and that included cosmetics-- which hugely emphasized superficial appearance. but as ppl started to progress in mentality, philosophy, Christianity, they realized that cosmetics in moderation wasn't a sign of riotous living-- but I can imagine the make up on an average high school girl today would send ppl screaming to the church altar 700 years ago

There might have been something in Babylon or Phonecia but I know for certain Egyptians were useing cosmentics. A practice common even in today's modern Egypt is the wearing of Khol around the Eyes which actually lessened the harshness of the sun on your eyes (hey they hadn't invented sunglasses yet). They also used perfumes and oils in their hair as well as other various things that they used to enhance their beauty such as henna on the skin and to dye hair. In the Middle Ages many places saw most cosmetics as sinful but in the middle east and many other places such as asia cosmetics were still in use.

Wasn't it the egyptians? Queen Nefertiti was already wearing kohl in her eyes during her reign.

I think it was Egyptians. I know they used kohl and henna. In midevil times it was considered sinful in Europe, and therefore, was only used by women in the sex industry.
