It's called a subcontinent for two reasons. First, it's a large triangular landmass that prominently juts out into the Indian Ocean -- a big peninsula. In that sense, it's like Asia Minor (Turkey), another subcontinent.
The other reason is that the Indian subcontinent is physically separated from the rest of Asia by the high Himalayan mountain range.
So the subcontinent is a part of Asia, but it's separated from the reat of Asia, and that's why they call it a subcontinent.
Historically, the whole thing was called India. Pakistan was created only in 1947 when they partitioned India, with most of the Muslims going to Pakistan, and most of the Hindus going to India.
Bangladesh was called East Pakistan at the time of partition in 1947. (It was a part of Pakistan.) But that didn't work out, so later East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh.
Pakistan and India are at odds over the border province of Jammu and Kashmir (usually called Kashmir). They've fought two or three wars over that disputed territory.

The earth's surface is composed of "plates" which move gradually, earthquakes being the consequences of these moves. The Indian plate was once a separate continent, but "crashed" into the Asian plate millions of years ago, causing the upheaval of the Himalayas. You can see the Indian plate on the attached map link, when India was attached to Pangea, an ancient continent, which split apart. Now, since India has a well-defined plate boundary, but much smaller than the Asian plate to which it is attached, it is called a "sub-continent".
Maybe in a billion years or so, it will drift away again and be a separate continent like Australia.

The real answer is that before 1947, India, pakistan and bangladesh were one country. The size of these three countries combined is very huge that's why they are called sub-continent.

India really covers the area what we call now as the subcontinent. Due to conflict of Hindus and Muslim in India they partitioned it despite the opposition of Mahatma Gandhi. Pakistan and Bangladesh were once one nation, they called the areas WEst and East Pakistan respectively. But they warred against each other that resulted in division.EAst Pakistan was renamed Bangladesh. Pakistan means pure land.

Why complain about the number of tests being played in Asia.Didn't you guys make the rules for a very long time.I'm pretty sure Eng has had more home games than any country in the world. I think in the end the number of wins or the percentage of wins matter really. And Aus is still at the top and they still play the game best at all levels(not the best in school cricket though).Asia needs to organize its cricket better coz we have loads of natural talent but not enough ways to use them properly.
