John Ritter played Jack Tripper on 3's Company, which aired back in the 1970's. His last role was on 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. The final season, the producers brought in James Garner and David Spade to help fill the void Ritter left. I think the show has been canceled. Here in St Louis, reruns air between 4-5 on the WB Channel 11.

To answer your question, they brought in James Garner as the grandfather and David Spade as the quirky uncle to try and save the show. They dealt with the death on the show. It was called Eight Simple Rules, though everyone has told you that, and it lasted at least another two seasons. I just thought you wanted the answer.
