Um, you can blame that on the fact that we spend hundreds of billions of dollars on wars. Seriously, that is a lot of money. Enough to really make our education system the best in the world. Enough to immunize all the children in the world for two decades, to make starvation and dehydration disappear for ten years, enough to put some real research into AIDS and cancer and other diseases. Our government is whack with their money.

While I agree, that it's better than nothing, the Gideon Bible, I believe, is a version of the King James Version, therefore, a Protestant version of the original bible--and well known to be a very poor translation from the Vulgate, the original bible, or from the Greek. The Pope in the 4th century asked Jerome to head up the group that organized scriptures into a book. Too many Christian communities were using different versions of the same scriptures or even scriptures that didn't coincide with Jesus' message. It was causing heresies. So the Pope decided all Christians, as the only Christians in the Western Hemisphere were Catholics, should be learning the same scriptures and the same versions of those scriptures. So, the bible was created--by the Catholic Church. It stayed exactly the same until the mid 16th century, when the Church of England was created because Henry VIII wanted a divorce from Katharyn of Aragon because she couldn't bear him a son after the Pope gave him special permission to marry his brother's widow. Not long after Henry, the King James Version of the bible was created. It was essentially the same as the Catholic Bible, but some books were removed by the Protestants. While I don't believe that Gideons are "of the devil," they are a Protestant denomination or sect, and the Church wouldn't approve.

Thailand is a smaller country--they don't have as many people to do that for.
And how are teachers unions determining the price of textbooks? Private corporations make textbooks and they determine the price, not teachers. Teacher are at the whim of textbook companies as well--there are only so many that universities, districts or states decide are acceptable--teachers must choose from them-and most of the time they are extremely high priced.
I wish teachers had that kind of control. Kids definitely wouldn't be paying those kind of outrageous prices.

As a college student nothing shocks me more than the amount of money we have to pay for books. I payed 400 dollars last semester for books and who knows how much this semester will cost me. Some colleges actually offer labtop computers for the time you spend at the college. Mine however does not.

There are some schools on the state I live in that gave students free laptops. My cousin got one in middle school. I'm not sure if she had to return it though.

Because there not pouring there entire funds down the drain via war and astronomical support for the military?
The U.S. sadly cares more about war than students, science, health care and many other things which should be important.
