Visit the wine country in Napa and Sonoma.

Driving through wine country is great, but can be crowded. Check out wine tasting in Healdsburg....just west of wine country (Napa/ Sonoma)...it MAY be less crowded. or do both :)

Check out some of the old redwoods if you have seen them before...amazing!! If you are in the Santa Cruz area go to Big Sur State Park. They have an easy little hike with some neat redwoods. Tons of redwood parks in far Northern California. Just make sure you go to see an OLD GROWTH forest...

The drive along Highway 1 is SPECTACULAR, and toursity for that reason. If you don't want to take the REALLY long drive from Monterey down to San Luis Obispo, take the route form San Francisco to Santa Cruz. It's about an hour and a half, with neat views.

Well if you visit San Francisco and want ultra touristy check out Fisherman's Wharf and shop at Pier 39. You can easily kill a day or two on the Wharf. While your there visit Alcatraz island and do the audio tour, take a Blue and Yellow tour of the bay. I like to take a cablecar to Union Square and people watch, or visit the cable car museum.

I agree, the wine country is great no matter what season. You can also do holiday shopping there pretty easily. Try extranomical, they are a good deal and have small groups so their wine country tour is more relaxed http://www.extranomical.com/HTML_PAGES/WINE_TRIP.htm Union Square also gets really nice around the holidays, especially when the christmas tree goes up. Don't forget that going to Tahoe is really cool especially if you like to ski and Yosemite in the winter is phenomenal with very few crowds.

Many of the wineries do decorate in keeping with the holiday season in Napa Valley
There are also great concerts (See schedule for Davies Symphony Hall)
Also, there is the Christmas festival at the Dunsmuir House in Oakland
Many other events and festivals, although its a little early for the schedule

Nevada City, CA has the most exciting Christmas festival. It is on, I think Wed. or Thur nights during December. Also, shopping and window shopping in SF.
