ok heres the down low on your question, there are several things that will help, the first make sure the system isn't over crowded and that you have plenty of free space, the second make sure that you have the drive defragmented, as fragmentation makes it where the system takes longer to write the files to disk for access, I noticed someone mentioned download accelleratior, simply put it isn't worth a crap, dont really change the speed unless its something that is on a basenet server because it runs via a proxy server port, another thing is if there is multiple places to download it from you can try the mirriors because it depends on where you are vs where the information is coming from and how many other people are trying to download it, another factor, ram, 512 is pretty good, but the more the better because this is where everything goes before it is sent to the hard drive, also the hard drives speed and size has a lot to do with it, as well as if there is a lot of temp files on it, to clean it up go to my computer, right click on the drive and then click properties do a disk clean up this will get rid of all the jumble thats left over from your running on the web and downloading, after you clean everything up defrag the system, etc do a restart this allows the paging file size to return to a normal state and will increase speed, there are also a lot of other tech awnsers dependant on the type of connnection you have, your isp, etc.. if you'd like to explore them further please feel free to contact and we'll go from there but give it a try and see if that helps you out, btw the os, and other hardware are also really relevent so if you would like to further state what that is could give you some per os baised awnsers as well

You're never going to make that laptop fast. Any money you spend on it is money that should have gone toward a new laptop. If you upgrade one thing, you'll simploy move on to the next bottleneck. And so forth. In the end it'll still be a slow old laptop with a number of expensive upgrades. And it'll be worth $100 if you're lucky. Right now it's worth $50 - $75.
The good news is that you can get a new up-to-date laptop for less than $600. Sell your old one to a student who needs a cheap laptop and move on.

A 1999 laptop is pretty old. I would recommend buying a new system. Laptops cost more than desktops to upgrade. Your lappy is probably not worth upgrading.

The MAIN thing that controls how fast you can dowload (concerning your computer) is your Internet connection type. Dial-up, Broadband, etc.
A faster hard drive will speed up saving the file as you download it
More memory wil help also
Have NO other programs running (or as few as possible) while downloading.

Eliminate uncessary files on your computer. Also you need to ad more memory(ram chips) and defragment your system. You can do this by right click on the icon "my computer" and window box shows up. You click on the word "manage" and the window "computer management" box will show up. On the left corner, you will see a list of choices, and click on the one that say's "disc defragmenter". Click on the button "analyze" The computer will check if you need to defragment your harddrive or not. If it does, click on the button "defragment". This will take about 2 hours dpending on the speed of your computer. You also need to check if you have a good utility software that eliminates virus and spyware programs that can make your system slow. Make sure you have firewall software if you don't have Windows XP.
