Nobel prizes are offered in different categories, such as peace, chemistry, philosophy, physics and so on.
The characteristics that prevail are those which break new ground, open new doors, answer old questions and/or benefit humanity as a whole.
It's not easy to make a big splash in this pond.
Isn't it odd, that the inventor of TNT would start this foundation?

Not necessarily projects. Concepts sometimes.
Look at the big picture. Life is not just a series of projects, sometimes it is pure thought to come up with an idea that is outside the bounds of what we call normal...Einstein was riding a train and he realized that the laws of physics are relative to your frame of reference...and the world changed.
What happens when someone has a revelation of the nature of gravity and thus concludes how we could use to travel or transport ourselves. That is Nobel type of material, compared to the invention of the pocket fisherman.
