Concrete is a mixture of a water activated adhesive (cement) and a substrate, or aggregate. the aggregate provides the strength and the cement keeps it together. The chemical reaction that takes place to harden, not dry, the cement is a complex exothermic reaction that causes a cross-linking of the cement particles.
