If you have a lease it should be stated somewhere in your lease what your security deposit was and unless something is noted it is assumed paid in a court of law. Also, there is generally a seperate security deposit addendum that defines what the terms are for a refund, etc. I would ask your landlord for a copy of your move in inspection sheet and a list of charges that could be assessed in advance of your move out. This lets them know that you are aware you made a security deposit and that you are expecting it back and they can't make up charges later. Also, different states have different time lines for returning a security deposit and different laws regarding the holding of the security deposit for landlords. I'd be happy to answer more if you need.

I received my refund of my security deposit approximately three weeks after moving out of my apartment. I suggest that before your move out date you should schedule an appointment to do a walk through with a representative of your landlord to determine what charges may be made against your security deposit and get an estimate of what amount you will receive in refund. I was only charged for my portion of water used in the building during my last month of residence. I ended up with approximately $90 out of $100 back.

Unless you paid cash you can use a bank statement as proof of payment. If you signed a lease it will have the terms of the security deposit and any amount refundable. The amount is usually determined after you have vacated the property and the landlord has inspected it

Yes. As long as you can prove you own the box you'll be fine. You probably have a bill for it lying around somewhere, and your ID (drivers licence, etc.) will also prove that you were indeed the owner.
