This is called edema, and it's normal. Especially at the very end of your pregnancy. Sleep with pillows under your upper body and maybe one pillow under your feet, just so that your feet are elevated a little. And when you are sitting down, always keep your feet elevated. If the swelling spreads to any other parts of your body, other than your hands, face, and feet, then see your doctor asap b/c this is a sign of pre-eclampsia or toxemia, and with that they usually induce labor.

Hi Airagirl17,
I am 31 and I had the same issue with swelling all over my body. You gain a lot of weight and most of it is fluid. You will start seeing a decrease in it, after the baby is born (not right after). The advice I was given by my doctors through both pregnancies was to kick my feet up to get better circulation going from my feet back to the rest of my body and be careful of the liquid intake. You may feel really hot, but that doesn't mean that you should just drink. You can try having flavoured popsicles, or sucking on ice. That way you're not gaining any unwanted fluid. When you have your meals then drink a glass or two of juice, milk, or water. It is a good thing to just wear barely anything, in your own home, instead of getting a glass of fluid every time you're hot. You might just need to feel the cool air for a while.

I have this problem also. I will be 39 weeks on the 17th and my feet and hands are swollen. My hands just started to swell a few weeks ago as to my feet have been swollen since i was about 6 months. Good luck with your baby and I'm sure that when you have the baby the swelling will go away. Try soaking you feet in warm water and epsom salt and keep them elevated about your heart. That's what i was told by my doctor. Sometimes my feet swell so tight that they hurt, especially sometimes when I'm driving and I have my foot on the gas, mashing down, it hurt because my feet are so tight. My doctor was talking about inducing my labor this week because I'm swollen so bad. my feet are turning dark and he got worried about that. Good luck with the baby and let me know what you have. I'm expecting a little boy on the 24th of this month. I hope I helped.

Lay down on your back or your left side and prop your feet up, higher than your heart. This helps a great deal. If you are eating foods that contain a lot of salt, like chips or crackers, or your add salt to your food, then you need to cut way back on those foods and salt. Salt and sodium causes your body to hold water, and causes swelling in your hands and feet. Seasoned Salt or the worst about this.
If the swelling is going past the ankles and up your legs... contact your OB/GYN ASAP! It could be pre-eclampsia, which is life threatening to you and your baby!!! This usually only happens in the last 3 months of pregnancy, and is more common in African-Americans. (I'm not trying to be racial ... just factual, so don't take it the wrong way) Your's and your baby's health is important and you need to talk to your OB/GYN about the swelling.
I wish the best of luck! And CONGRATS on the baby!

Hi i'm 32 weeks pregnant and have had lots of edema (swelling) the last few days. I know that they say to drink lots of water and to rest. (put your feet up) You might want to call your dr. tomorrow if you rest for 12 hours and the swelling doesn't go down. I have found the website www.babycenter.com soooo helpful with my pregnancy. Go to the message boards and birthclubs you can talk to other women due in the same month as you. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming mommyhood!!

You should really tell your doctor because in some cases swollen hands and feet mean a sign of high blood pressure and could lead to preeclampsia. But sometimes it is normal. The doctor told me if you keep your feet up high(higher than your body)for a a couple of hours a day a swelling will go down.

At the end of my pregnancy, my feet and hands were swollen, too. I think it's a fairly common thing. Once you ahve the baby, though, you'll go back to normal. Congratulations on the new baby.

It is normal, but you can kick back and relax, put your feel up. It will go away after you give birth. Not right away...takes a couple days. Anyway, goodluck and congrats
