I don't want it to make a lot of sound when I dial-up.

Your S.O.L. buddie....the small peizo speaker is built into the modem and cant be turned off....at best, if you know where the modem is, look for the buzzer, it will be a small round module with a hole or series of holes in it. Put some masking tape over the holes.

look under your device manager and find your modem and look at properties, sometimes the modem has a built in volume adjustment control in this area. Other times look at the software that came with your moden and it might provide a way to adjust the volumn (mute) the sound produced by your modem.

that is the sound that it makes to dial in to the phone system. Just like a phone. If you were to get rid of the sound it would not connect.

In Xp you can goto Phone and Modem options and should be able to do it there. I'm older versions, you will have to goto the Modem's properties and reduse to volume.

Why not go to the speaker which shows in the bottom right hand tool box....right click it and get your entire speaker set up.. can mute everything there. Or, make necessary adjustments.

yes, go to your modem setup look to your modem sound...
