Well, the best tampons for young girls are the "Tampax Pearls." The applicator is soft, silky feeling and easy to insert. Read carefully, the enclosed pamphlet on how to insert tampons. And remember, tampons should be changed every 2 1/2-3 hours. And never wear tampons to bed, which could possibly cause toxic shock syndrome (although rare). Now, for pads, the best pads are any brand of pads that are labeled "ultra thins." I hate bulky pads, and the ultra thins are super thin, and very absorbent. Change them every 2 1/2-3 hours as well. Now, they also make pads with wings, but if you are small like me, sometimes, the wings are bulky, and if your panties are cut small, the wing part that flaps over, can irritate your skin. I just hate wings. At night, purchase pads that are labeled "overnights." Kotex makes the best overnight maxi pads. Now, towards the end of your period, you can wear panty liners, but change them often because they are very small. After your period, you will notice a clear discharge. So, wear pantyliners on those two days after your period stops. This is normal. This is your body's way of naturally cleansing itself. So, never use douches!!!! They can mess up your ph balance in your vagina. And you don't want that to happen, because it could lead to infection. Cleanse your vagina with a mild soap and water. I prefer to wear white cotton panties when I'm on my period. That way you can bleach your panties after your period is over. Also, keep a stash of what us women call "period panties." These are your most ugly, busted down panties that you only wear during your period. Save your good lacy, cute panties for everyday use. Good luck, and email me if you have any more questions.

ok - if you have never had your period before, you will be fine with any brand maxi (or mini really). I would wait on the tampons until you are getting consistent flow each month. You can always go the the feminine protection sites for more info:

http://www.stayfree.com/
http://www.kotex.com/

etc. Right now I am partial to Always, but my sister has recently decided that they are more trouble than they are worth. We all go through hit or miss and it changes over the course of our lives, what works best for each of us.

Remember that like anything, this change will be gradual in you. It's not like you will be one way one day and the next gushing blood. At first you will notice a few drops on your panties - keep track of when on your own calendar - and it will build gradually. At first it might be every 6 weeks, but eventually it will even out to every 4 weeks (often predictably, after a time - like the last sunday of every month or some such).

In the meantime, if you are worried, carry a pad in your purse (or leave a couple in your locker) in case the first time happens at school or something and remember - everybody goes through this. This is all perfectly normal and nobody knew just what to do the first time. There are those of us who lived with our mothers and mom didn't do a good job of explaining anything, anyway - so you are not alone.

Peace!

PS - ah yes, the cramp remedy. I always preferred Pamprin, though I know others who preferred Midol too. Oddly the best thing for cramps is sit ups. Do 10 and you will be fine.

If you want tampons - pick a brand with applicators to help you get them in the right spot. The slims are good for girls.

first of all, don't be scared! all girls go through it and you can always talk about it with your friends.

on the boxes they tell you which kinds are for your absorbency. it's really easy. most are color coated too on the box along with a label.
and they have tampons just for teens that are probably smaller. pads that are like "super plus" are usually used on the first 1-3 days. "regular" is used in the middle from your 3-5 day (i'm guessing) your last days you just use pantiliners (no tampon then). oh yeah, and pads with wings are better than with no wings. and also, some say that tampons hurt, but they really don't. only the first couple times when you don't put them in correctly or far enough. when really it only takes a few seconds once you've become "proficient" and you can't feel them one bit.

if you look at the products it will be easy to tell. and for when you are sleeping they usually say "over night" or something along those lines on the box. don't worry about it! it's really easy picking them out everything is perfectly labeled and you can go to a drug store for a variety of brands. i usually get kotex and use both pads and tampons. best of luck ;) and if you're scared to get it, be sure to carry around pads or tampons in your purse or backpack (or both!) just in case.

You should start off with pads, Buy a pack with wings and keep them handy just in case. I wouldn't suggest using tampons until you're comfortable with getting your period and you're maybe a little older...

Don't be scared, You'll be fine.. If you need help just ask a female adult, Even a teacher at your school, We all go through the same thing so there's no need to be embarrassed.

aw. an aunt or a friend or a friends mom could help you... you will want to buy tampons with the word junior or lite on them since you are so young, tampax compak is nice because they are so small and would be easier to hide at school. as far as pads go pretty much any would work (i don't use them) but you should look for some that are absorbent and have velcro "wings" to make sure they stick to your panties and don't slide around.

don't worry sweetie, when it happens, you will be just fine. if you have cramps take some midol or ibuprofen, like advil.

Its ok I think you just use pads because I think you are not ready to use tampons. I started my first time when i was 11 and half.. Its ok to be afraid but you'll get use to it. right now I am 14 and i still use pad but i have tampon for swimming. When you are beginner I think its better to use pads

dont push it hon you dont want it yet any way.i have mine now and its hell and im 28. make sure you have pantie liners. always brand is great. after you get it is the time to decide what you are comfertable with. i was 12 when i goe mine at school and wearing white pants!! once you have it then you can choose between pads and tampons. i tried pads the first day and then went to tampons.they dont hurt and if you insert them corectly you shouldnt feel them at all. i always thought pads were exactly like diapers. gross!!!

I like Stayfree. My daughter is 12 and she just had her first period. Could you maybe talk to another woman your close to? Maybe a school nurse or your teacher if she's a woman? What about aunts, grandma, cousins or your best friends mom? If you get one kind you don't like you can try something different the next time.

carefree pad, you will get them in longs so as that they cover and don't provide you a wedgie. lol and that they are actually not super thick so which you do not experience like your donning a diaper. Tampax is the superb tampon to apply. the different ones continuously seem to leak.
