If you're thinking federal govt, you need to remember that there is a lot of red tape involved with career development. Moving up, moving around and/or getting a raise usually isn't as easy as in the private sector and pay grades are pretty established.

Some other considerations might include where you want to live, how much you want to travel and how often you might have to worry about getting reassigned to a different office, if they shut your office down, which can happen in the federal govt. positions.

Thanks for your service to our country and good luck getting your release when your tour is up.

Perhaps you should spend the rest of your time studying up as much as you can on security communications/verification procedures. When you get out of the Army, having a nice job as a security consultant pays big big bucks nowadays.
Of course, you will still have to see a lot of sand but for well over $100K a year, it could very well be worth it.

Best of luck to you!
And thanks for your service.
