I don't want it to make a lot of sound when I dial-up.

Right click on my computer icon. Then select manage. Select devices from the left hand side. Find your modem and right click on it and select properties. When that pops up look through the different tabs until you see one for the modem volume. Mine is called modem. You can turn off the modem there. Hope that helps.

You can't. Even if you have your sound muted, the modem will still make sounds. It communicates in much the same way as a touch-tone phone.

Depends on what modem you have...
Start>Settings>Control Panel
Please find a side bar, and click "Classic Style" if you haven't already done so
then find the item titled "Modem" and double click.
Find your modem, click once, then click Properties.
It should be somewhere in there.
Please do not change any baud or speed information.

this is very easy
hope ya running windows XP but should be the same

>Click Start
>Connect To
>Show all Connections
Right Click Your default Connection
>properties
>configure
>click enable modem speaker off
but make sure u are offline :D hope i helped
