I'm thinking about driving from Reno, Nv to Santa Cruz and i'm looking for a good place to stay that is resonably priced. I will also be traveling with my son, so something that isn't too far from the Boardwalk. Also how far is San Jose Airport from Santa Cruz?
I'd appreciate any hotel/motel suggestions.

San Jose Airport is around 45 minutes away from Santa Cruz (35 miles).
Try using FareChase to find hotels/motels, they search dozens of websites for you, so you dont have to. And they show you all the hotels on a nice map, so you can choose the one that fits yu the most!!!

San Jose to Santa Cruz is about 1 hour through the Santa Cruz mountains. Near the boardwalk there are a lot of reasonable places. You may want to check with AAA to find one that is rated pretty well. Capitola is nice, not far from Santa Cruz boardwalk, it may be less expensive than right on the boardwalk and much more quiet.

I would suggest that you find a motel maybe up on ocean ave or soquel ave and not to close to the boardwalk, there are lots of bad things that can happen to tourist down there,i lived in Santa Cruz for the last ten years,so i know, also it takes about 45 min over the Santa Cruz hills if there is no traffic.....they have a holiday in express there that's close enough to the boardwalk to walk to yet far enough away from the rift raft and there are lots of friendly people to help you when you get there

Agreed, there are some really crummy parts near the Boardwalk. It's not unsafe at the Boardwalk, but I wouldn't want to stay at some of the hotels down there.

In capitola there is a hotel called the Venetian. It's right on the water. It's easy enough to rent bikes or drive over to the Boardwalk. Not sure how pricey it is though...

Its about an hour. A "fancier" place to stay that I heard was really nice is "Chaminad" in Santa Cruz. But a more reasonable, clean hotel that is right accross from the Boardwalk is the "Carousel Inn." Reasonable, clean and right accross the street!

The Sea Breeze Inn is a good hotel to stay in. It is only one parking lot away from the boardwalk and it is pretty reasonable and you can walk from the hotel to the Boardwalk easily. This hotel is on 2nd street.
