The surprising strength of Hezbollah’s resistance, and its continuing ability to fire rockets into northern Israel in the face of the constant Israeli bombing, the Middle East expert told me, “is a massive setback for those in the White House who want to use force in Iran. And those who argue that the bombing will create internal dissent and revolt in Iran are also set back.”

Israel is following its own agenda. But a Pentagon consultant informed Hersh that the Bush White House “has been agitating for some time to find a reason for a preëmptive blow against Hezbollah.” Hezbollah’s capture of two Israeli soldiers last month provided the pretext for a massive bombing campaign than had been planned long before.

The Bush team is chomping at the bit to use the “lessons” from Israel’s war for its own on Iran. A former intelligence officer told Hersh: “We told Israel, ‘Look, if you guys have to go, we’re behind you all the way. But we think it should be sooner rather than later—the longer you wait, the less time we have to evaluate and plan for Iran before Bush gets out of office.’” The Bush team apparently believes that they are entitled to create a few more catastrophes before Bush’s time runs out.

Hersh highlights the harebrained notion underlying the Israeli bombing campaign: “Israel believed that, by targeting Lebanon’s infrastructure, including highways, fuel depots, and even the civilian runways at the main Beirut airport, it could persuade Lebanon’s large Christian and Sunni populations to turn against Hezbollah, according to the former senior intelligence official.”

This has backfired massively. And yet the Bush administration appears to still believe that a U.S. bombing campaign in Iran would turn the Iranian people against the Iranian government.

There is no evidence that Bush or Cheney have yet recognized any drawbacks, political or otherwise, from sending Americans off to die for damnfool ideas.

I had received an e mail from Middle East Realities two months back that Israel will massively attack Lebanon and it did happen. Israel is using its ally and long time agent Hezbollah to appear innocent and "justified" It has killed 1500 civilians both Christians and Muslims and UNO officers deliberatley so it proves who is number 1 terrorist. It is sad that we AMericans are funding this terrorism through tax dollars.

You must be kidding. If that monster in Tehran tries something stupid his whole country will go up with him. I find it amusing that you think that capturing 2 soldiers (and killing 8 others) as well as sending missiles into Israeli cities is just a "pretext". You guys only give value to human life when you can hide behind it. 2 of the terrorists caught in London were actually going to sacrifice their baby to blow up innocent people.

Israel has been bombarded with the aid of Hezbollah terrorist rockets and gunfire for years. they have the superb suited to guard themselves. Hezbollah terrorists placed the civilians out as shields then parade around their ineffective our bodies for the cameras for propaganda purposes. i think of human beings have faith that if Hezbollah won Israel’s territory that they could be happy and all of the terrorist conflict could end there. i know that's not the case. Terrorist Muslims cover at the back of a cloak of religion whilst they seek for to learn superb international ability. The Koran states that Allah can't return till the international is cleansed of all infidels (every person who would not have faith in Allah).you start to get a expertise of why they hate something of the non-Muslim international once you examine the tenants interior the Koran and the Hadiths.I examine extra militant rhetoric interior the Koran and Hadiths than I ever heard or examine in my 8 years lively accountability interior the army. those Muslim holy books call for them to do all which you have seen the terrorists doing interior the final 50 years. it won't be a marvel to every person that they are doing what they’re bible and Muslim clerics tell them to.Isreal is in basic terms a velocity bump and something of the international is the venture. in case you don’t have faith that the same old Muslim has an identical opinion with the terrorist’s movements then clarify to me why they have been dancing interior the streets after 9/11.hey to all of you, and might our destiny generations in no way ought to bear the scourge of non secular tyranny interior the destiny.

technically, i am not allowed to get into confrontations with civilians, especially about politics and those who engage in them. i am not even allowed to stand up for myself or my fellow brothers-in-arms to civilians. however, i can say this: i am an american soldier. i do whatever it is i am told to do in the lawful orders of my commander in chief and those of the congress of the United States. thus far, all u.s. military operations have been approved by THE CONGRESS of the United States. something that can only be learned by leaving this great country and experiencing the loss of personal freedom and liberties is that YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING about what is happening on the otherside of the world, nor behind the scenes here and abroad.
on a final note i suggest you learn all details before ranting on people you don't know, and study up on former u.s. president roosevelt: "military matters should only be left to military men." if you are not personally going to fight, don't talk one way or the other about it.

Wow. Maybe you should join your Hezbollah friends since you think so much of them and spread their propaganda.

AGAIN, I'm not surprised that liberals once again aid the enemy with their BS and spreading terrorist propaganda.

You should receive a rope necklace, IMHO. Or, are you a fundamentalist Islamofascist? I can't tell the difference between Islamofascists and liberals sometimes.
