Sometimes a single egg is fertilized, but before it implants, it splits into 2 separate babies. This results in identical twins. There is about a 1 in 250 chance of having identical twins, regardless of genetics, fertility treatment, or anything else. The two babies are exactly the same genetically.
Then, in some cases, an egg splits in two before fertilization. If both eggs are fertilized by different sperm, the result is half-identical twins. They always share precisely half their genes (the ones from the mother), and, on average are 75% genetically the same, although it can be closer to 50% or closer to 100%. Some people think that many twins that were once thought to be fraternal are actually half-identical.
Fraternal twins happen when a woman ovulates twice and both eggs are fertilized by different sperm. They are no more genetically similar than any two siblines, sharing on average 50% of the genes, but possibly anywhere from almost 0% to almost 100%.

I agree
identical is one egg one sperm that splits into two babies thus they will always be the same sex and have the same exact genes.
faternal is two eggs and two sprem that get fertilized at the same time. They really are nothing more than siblings but oddly enough they can still look a lot alike. Mary Kate and Ashley Olson are faternal and they look almost identical. Faternal twins can also have two different dads if per chance the mood was right and she slept with two people back to back, thus each man fertilizing a seperate egg.

Identical twins do not have to look exactly alike as some people are mistakenly saying. They are the same gender but from there they can have differences. The thing that makes them identical is that the egg was fertilized and split.
Fraternal twins can be of the same gender or boy/girl. They also can look exactly alike or nothing alike at all.
Mirror image twins are not only completely identical, but they do exactly what they are called...they mirror everything from looks to what hand is their dominant.

Identical twins look alike and come from one egg that has been fertilized and split into two eggs.identical twins are of the same sex. faternal twins looking nothing like each other and come from to separate eggs that were fertilized and sometimes can be fertilized by two different sperm cells. faternal twins can be of the same sex or opposite sex.

Identical twins are from one egg that splits in two. Sometimes the split is not complete, and this is what causes conjoined, or Siamese twins. Fraternal twins are from two eggs. This happens when the ovary releases two instead of one. Actually the lady below is wrong about the DNA. Identical twins share the SAME DNA because they are split from the same egg that has all the same genes.

Identical twins come from the same sperm & ovum and have identical genes.
Fraternal twins are genetically the same as any brothers and sisters very unlikely to be identical they come from seperate sperm and ovum.
Identical twins must be the same sex. Fraternal twins don't have to be.
Theoretically fraternal twins could have different fathers; but is unlikely due to guard sperm (recent discovery). This would require a very socially outgoing mother though.

Idental are the same sex first off and faternal can be both the same sex or male and female. Identical twins look alike but do not have the same dna. faternal twins do not have to look alike. I hope this answers your question!

Identical twins have the same DNA, blood type, gender, etc. They have the same hair color, swirls in their hair, and eye color.
Fraternal twins are "twins" but they are genetically more like a set of siblings. They may look nothing alike, or they might look exactly alike and still be fraternal.
