When it start the HP the screeen goes total black after the Xp splash screen. The only other mode work is the Safe mode and the VGA mode. Whn in VGA mode when I change to higher resolution or colour the screen turn blank like the startup. I suspect some display problem. Any idea? Please, professional technical suggestion only. The machin is past its warranty/service contract date. There are no virus and the display card is neither Intel, ATI, nor nVidia.

Boot in SAFE MODE & try using the RESTORE feature and Restore computer to a day or two BEFORE the problem appeared.

Did this problem just arise recently because you installed new hardware such as video card? But since you can run in safe mode, I would suggest to make sure your computer is clean of everything, viruses and the like. Then try System Restore and see if that does anything. If all else fails, you can reformatt your computer if you are willing to lose all your data (but since you can enter safe mode, try backing up your data if you're going to reformat). Since you have a HP computer, reformatting is easy, since HP doesn't require a recovery CD, just press (I believe) F10 when the computer starts up, then you will enter the menu to reformatt.

SO, then what IS the type of the display card?? And the montior too. You also need to match the display type with the settings. Probably you have the wrong driver, so it cannot tell what the valid display modes are.
There are two options:
1. download the correct drivers
2. try different combinations of settings, in terms of resolution, colors, and hertz (frequency) until you find one that works for you.

the first thing I would do is look for an updated graphics driver, you should find out what your graphics card maker is and go to their site with the name of the card or model number, whatever they use to id their cards and get the latest driver.
if you have an integrated graphics card (ie one built into the motherboard) then go to the motherboard manufacturer for a new driver.
Try a new monitor, it could be that your monitor is on the way to the scrap pile. (if its old it may not support higher color ratios and that could stop it from displaying properly)

funny thing is mine did this took it into several repair shops couldn't find anything wrong
printer was on a USB port and turned on this stopped the computer from starting properly
turned it off and it worked fine
apparently a glitch with HP no resolve as of today except turn off printer
