Schindler's List is an excellent one! Gorgeous and haunting.

The score to The Village is also a surprising thing of beauty. Definitely has that lonely, somber feel.

The score to the miniseries Mists of Avalon has some very nice moments in that style, esp. the opening number by Lorena McKennitt, although some of the music is more of the fantasy adventure style.

The score to The Passion of the Christ has some amazing pieces, but some of it is heavily ethnic (Middle Eastern) so may not quite fit in with what you want, although it's quite beautiful.

If I think of others I'll edit. I've got a collection I'll need to thumb through :)

The Crying Game has a very emotional score with a somber tone to it. Also check out the Legends of the Fall soundtrack, beautiful but in some places it has a very sad feel to it. I think you'd enjoy them both.

Check out the Score (not the soundtrack by Prince) for "Batman" the one starring Michael Keaton. It's dark. Get the CD. Try different search engines.

Oh, there's a beautiful score for "Somewhere In Time". And I love the music for "The Color Purple". Check your local library.

One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. The opening song. I have no clue what it is called though.
