Awesome question. I'm just most everybody else, I demand a fast machine, capable of performing all of todays fast paced games etc. Todays stuff is extremely demanding so be sure you think long and hard before just buying a machine because of price. I build computers and have for many many years. The better machines are being made from scratch at just about every computer shop on the planet. Because it's being built to your specifications, YOU get to decide what all it has inside of it and YOU get to control it's capabilities. A 3.0 gig system should be plently fast, and because you can now have 3 or more gigs of Ramm Memory, you'll be able to keep up with todays demands. By buying a good video card with a lot of memory into it, you'll be able to keep up with todays online games with no problems. Make sure, of course, that the machine has everything built onboard for your convienence such as Wireless Internet 801.11 card, onboard media,,,etc. If I can help in any way, feel free to email me at dumbbutt4321@yahoo.com I'll be happy to help. Your best bet is to go to a couple (at least) of computer shops that build laptops. Explain to them what you want and how you will be using it. They will provide estimates and details of what they would put in for you.
If you want a off the shelf I would recommend a Toshiba for price/performance/durability.
