try start menu-->Run and type in "sndvol32" without the quotes. make sure nothing is mute and set volume high. if that doesn't work check volume of physical speakers. If the speakers are embedded in the computer.. I can't recommend much.

Be sure you've got your mini-jack plugged into the correct receptacle in your sound card. Also, and I don't mean to sound like I'm dissing you, but do you have an on/off volume control on one of your speakers? If so, make sure that's turned on and the volume is turned up a bit.

I had a recent problem like of this nature, it turned out that the software we had installed for our sound card had checked a setting called "digital output only", having analog speakers this made it so our sound didn't play...

check to see if you can find such a setting in your sound software, if so uncheck it and try to play again

Maybe you should try checking the sound cable first, also check if the stereo is plug in or the on/of push button is in the correct position otherwise check the software or the settings/setup of your stereo

They work because of magnets. Sometimes they just get demagnetized or screwed up in someother way. And just will never work again. Older they are the more likely this is.
