It's difficult to give an absolute answer to your question.

Technically, the Philippines is experiencing a "population explosion." With a birth rate of 26 per thousand population and a death rate of 6 per thousand, the islands have a rate of natural increase of 20 per thousand or 2 percent per year.

If any country maintains a 2 percent annual growth rate, it will double in population in 35 years.

However, the latest projection suggests that the Philippines population will slow down a little in the future.

Today, there are about 85,000,000 people living in the islands; but the projected population for 2050 is 147,300,000, a bit short of an expected population of more that 170,000,000, given current trends.

With a per capita income almost three times higher than Indonesia and a little more than double that of Cambodia, the Philippines is still a poverty-striken country. Most West European countries have a per capita income about 5 or 6 times that of the Philippines.

Demograhers, who study population trends, see evidence that the islands may double in population around 2040, and then begin to decline. This assumes that the per capita income increases and is fairly evenly spread across ethnic and social class lines.

However, we need to remember that the Philippines has a total fertility rate of 3.5. To be a stable population, a country needs to have a history of 2.1. Therefore, the fate of the Philippines depends on each woman having no more than 2 children.

So, although the islands are in the midst of a population explosion, it is one that can be controlled if the proper action is taken immediately.
