check list - air filter - fuel filter - spark plugs - plug wires - pcv - vacuum lines - map sensor - throttle position sensor - coolant temperature sensor - fuel pressure - o2 sensor, just some of the things that will cause a check engine light to come on with out setting a code and if you touch the end of the o2 sensor the oil in your skin will burn into the sensor and cause it to misread, also you have a body computer to check and the transmission, which are often overlooked

That light can come on for 100's of reasons, some of them can drive you crazy throwing money at the problem. If you have an Advance or Auto Zone parts house they will run the code on the car for free. The problem with the codes are vague, and they can have you looking at several parts. Over 75000 miles it's more than likely a cylinder running too rich or lean, and that's something you wouldn't notice right away.

American cars always have check engine lights on. Once we switched to a toyota, the light came on once, for a water pump.

Ah, on the Cavalier, it means you have about 50 miles until your car will totally disintegrate.
