Birds need to sleep just like other animals.
Some of the seabirds such as petrels and albatross appear to be able to sleep on the wing, though they only do so in extremely rough weather. Normally they sleep on the surface of the ocean.
Migrating birds have been known to go for as much as a week without landing but like the seabirds they are presumed to sleep on the wing.

Nick, no albatross has ever been observed to go for more than a few days without landing. There is no evidence that they do anything but sleep when they land.

Albatross can go for weeks, but then they glide on the circumpolar winds.
I would imagine that transoceanic flying birds have places where they can rest (islands, atolls, etc). I would also like to know how long they keep going before resting. Arctic tern are not big birds, so it makes one wonder how far they can fly without resting.
If anyone knows the facts, please speak up.

It will change according to bird.Birds like crow can stay on air only for some minutes.Eagles can stay for 15Min to 1 hr.In some of north american countries a bird(i don't know the name) can fly for thousands of Kms without rest. They will migrate from one place to another because in the change of climate!
So according to birds time change!

Some birds like albatrosses can stay aloft for months at a time. They sleep while in flight by resting half of their brain while the other half remains active. Swifts may also sleep on the wing.
