I understand the democrat and republican thing, but I don't understand the whole conservative/liberal thing. I would like an explanation on the difference between being conservative and liberal if you can explain it, and if most democrats are liberals.

I think that most people do not think of themselves as either Democrat or Republican.

Most people, deep in their hears, have particular personal feelings about the many conditions under which they want to live. And when they are asked about their affiliations, they pick one or two, from among their many, and use those to classify themselves.

The people who are part of the leadership of the political parties do not all feel the same about things. Most have one or two objectives and they accept the objectives of the other members because they want those other members to accept theirs. It's called, "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours."

If you could see into the minds of political party people you would find first a great deal of greed, second a deep inclination for power, and third a wide mixture of conservative and liberal bents.

I doubt if there is a true Democrat or Republican anywhere.

You can be liberal or conservative and be a member of either party. There is no way to know what most democrats are without asking every Democrat.

There are liberal, moderate (meaning between liberal and conservative), and conservative democrats, the same way there are liberal, moderate, and conservative republicans. Liberal to conservative is a spectrum scale that measures to which extreme view does a persons belief fall closest too.

Here are some definitions.

Liberal: Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Conservative: Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change. One favoring traditional views and values.

I am moderate, but Republicans like to use the word liberal because it make the Democrat seem like they are so far left, they shouldn't be elected. People look at liberals as hippies, they hate any type of war, they are willing to let murderers go free, etc. Right now if you are considered liberal, that means you supposedly hate not only the war, but the soldiers who are fighting as well. Being called a conservative would be on the opposite end of the spectrum. You believe this should be a religious state (Christian), being gay should be illegal, death penalty for almost everyone who jaywalks, etc. Both sides try to use the words as slander.

In 2005, voters self-identified themselves in these percentages:
Democrat, 36; republican, 30%; Independent, 22%; Liberal, 20%; Moderate, 42%; Conservative, 34%.

However, even though people self-identify as one group or another, they will tend to support causes more from one side or the other.

Here's a pretty unbiased site with a discussion of the ideas of liberals and conservatives (plus others):

as a democrat and a liberal i must say, i find the behavior of the republicans far more radical than the "liberals". we seem to be more conservative than the so called conservatives. they spend without end, do not follow the constitution, and are basically out for themselves.
