Reality isn't very entertaining anymore especially when its a re-creation of what we already know or have experienced. I don't mind well thought-out documentaries, but dramatizing the reality of people suffering is not of interest. I think Hollywood is being run like sloppy whorehouse ... nothing is sacred or deemed inappropriate. Its corporate America that is greenlighting all of this crap in the theatres. They shape how you feel and what you do with those feelings. Originality has gone wayward. Its all about the bottom-line. $$$
I'll take "Pollyanna" or "Superman" anyday!

It seems that most people want a movie to provide relief from real life concerns and I think this should be the focus of most movies.
However, other people don't want entertainment but want an intellectual experience from their movies. Still, there are plenty of intellectual topics other than those that dwell on the horrors of the world.
Given the current state of the world, movies probably need to be light.
By the way, my free public library contains numerous copies of each popular movie and well as DVDs of all major television series. All you do is log onto the library web site, select the movies you want and the staff pulls them for you. You just drop by the library and pick up your selections in a section reserved for you! Librarys have greatly improved.

I understand your position, Some of those movies all they want to do is tell a side of a story.. Go see Pirates is Great or Superman it was entertaining.. The rainbow has many colors to choose from, because we all have different taste... If you do not like sad movies stay away from Oliver Twist, Eight below and even Click... Those are Sad... Go for Xman it had lots of Action..

My opinion is that, like jounalism, we're trying, maybe to hard, to make sure that society doesn't too soon forget tragedies like that. I guess Shcindler's List would be a good example of that. People forget that such horrors took place in our lifetime, and that we need to find a way to make peace and stop such things from happening....

Interesting question.
Perhaps you have something there!
We have become dependent on so much shock value for our entertainment; we have to view suffering to appreciate our own lives, and we are obsessed, perhaps, with our own mortality.
Interesting food for thought (and conversation).
