are they hoping that since their fans are usually younger that they haven't heard these songs before or is it because some people there might be parents and so they play them so they actually know a song? *just wondering because Saving Jane did a Petty and U2 song Saturday night*

No. The reason is because the older artist/band was an influence on their music. So Saving Jane is playing Petty and U2 in tribute and in thanks for the inspiration.

Maybe they're just paying tribute to the older artists who inspired them to play. I think I remember reading somewhere, when Santana won their Grammy award(s) for Supernatural, Carlos was quoted as saying something to the effect that newer artists who are serious about their music know that they have to "go through us" (older artists) to get to today. I don't write my own music myself yet when I play my synthesizer, but there are so many rock, classical, jazz, and New Age artists that inspire me, that I cover as many of their works as I can.

cos U2 is the best band in the world! and I'm younger so don't think I'm saying that b/c i'm old. I went to see them last fall, awesome concert!
