I had to show up for work at 8.30 am because classes started at that time and I had to teach, but my boss never arrived before 10.00 am. I once heard him make a snide comment about the fact that I left work every day at 4.30 pm but he stayed until 6.00 pm... It was like he was completely oblivious to the fact that I arrived 90 minutes before him!

I don't think long lunches go unnoticed- I just think that there is a perception that they are less damaging than arriving late. If you're at home you don't know what's happening at work, but if you've already shown up that day you can judge for yourself what is an appropriate lunch break based on the amount of work you have to do.

What really kills me is smokers who spend half the day outside on smoke breaks.

the point why being late is a career killer is, it is a threshold to laziness...somehow in the near future you might not want to go to work for one day, then one day is not enough, you apply for a leave, and the productivity at the office is staggered because you keep on popping up only when you want to, then your supervisors might be thinking, they could go on without you anyway, much better, than expecting you to show up...
being late is unprofessional. Unprofessional means not being on time and no respect for other people's time... Unprofessional means that you might not be capable of maintaining your duties, so that means you are a candidate for negligence of duty...
Do you ever think that in any way, since you still want to go to work...still wakes up in the morning to go to work...why dont you go to work on time? Not early? I mean you just have to adjust a little of your time to be ON time for work....
Not being on time pisses your supervisors and can really get your career crippled.
People who leave early are the ones who are confident they finished their work early, and so the supervisors believe that they have done their fair share of today's productivity...so they are unnoticed..
So goes with long lunches, they don't happen everyday but people don't have enough money to have long lunches everyday, so this is tolerated in the office...long lunches happen when there is an occassion to celebrate and after 5pm isn't feasible enough for the office team to meet.....it's a case to case basis... anyway, it's ok as long as you stay late to pay back the time you wasted in long lunches...

Good question - I guess the late comers give the illusion of sleeping in and therefore are lazy.

The early leavers go noticed by me, but I guess it is presumed if they got there early they already worked enough and deserve some leeway - perhaps they have an important appointment or something, people presume.

No. in case you examine Bret Hart's e book, you'll discover that Hulk Hogan filled each section, Stadium and each and each venue around the globe that the WWF ran shows. each wrestler on the cardboard made an rather good type of money because the venues were filled, numerous merchandise grow to be offered and tv rankings were extreme. even as the perfect Warrior grew to grow to be Champion, he might want to no longer promote out each venue and each and each of the wrestlers on the cardboard made a lot less funds. perfect Warrior grow to be no longer as large a draw as Hulk Hogan, so the alternative grow to be made to change champions. no longer something personal, that's how the wrestling organization has continually labored. Wrestling Promotions desire champions who draw followers to the arenas, purchase merchandise and watch the suits on television. yet another difficulty with the Warrior, is that he might want to stay for awhile and then go away. He must have executed that 5 or 6 cases. it isn't person-friendly to construct storylines round someone who's continually leaving. besides, he grow to be a one dimensional power wrestler and he had to be in the hoop with a experienced opponent to make him seem good. different wrestlers were given drained of getting to make the perfect Warrior seem good each and each of the time.

Perception. If you are on time at work and do an awesome job, no body notices when you steal time during lunch breaks. But if you are late to work, do an awesome job, take your lunch break AND work over-time, you are criticized. It's all perception.

Well, you kinda answered your own question.....it's unnoticed. People notice when you aren't to work on time, but once the day gets underway, people are so busy that they really don't notice what other people are doing.
