Alot of laptops have a power savings setting that keeps the cooling fan off until the temp reaches a certain point. What you will hear is the fan turning on and off periodically. To keep your laptop the coolest you could change those settings so the fan runs more often keeping the system cooler overall.

Sounds like the fan's broken or not enough... maybe someone overclocked it too much and now it's a cooking appliance

There are bases that have many fans that suck the air away from laptops... some aren't that expensive at all.

Something's seriously wrong - you should watch it, it's not only bad for the computer, but it's a fire hazard!

Take it into a computer store that knows and repairs laptops.

Back up your stuff first, if there are any files on there.

Look to see if there is something blocking the air vents. They really need to be on a surface like a table, your body heat could be making it hotter. It also could be it's a Dell! Should have gotten the best, a Mac!

My laptop gets a little warm sometimes, but never burning hot. There must be a problem with yours. You should call up Dell. See what they have to say and what they can do about it.
