Also, what are the skills that I must possess (i.e., research, valuation skills, economics)

You should build up equity research skills. Understand fundamental analysis and environmental scanning. The portfolio matrix you mentioned is essential. You can also build your own refined portfolio matrix based on your own specific value-drivers.
