well, it is for our company's halloween costume party. i did win the top prize among hundreds of contestant. we have to parade and show off in front of hundreds of people. no one knew from outside that its me except my co-workers who seen me changing in the bathroom. i just did it for fun, so after i scared everyone in the lobby, i went back to work without knowing i won. by the way, i remember beating shrek and fiona, e.t., tigger, cleopatra, ninja, foxy brown, sumo wrestler and most of all dracula. i know i beat him, wearing his clothes :) i wish i can post the picture, it's a scary one but it's too hot to wear.it's a lot of fun though....
thank you all the great answers..we can get idea from here for halloween costume events......

As far as winning awards... that usually goes with being creative with your halloween costumes. Some of the best costumes are usually mostly created from things you have around the house.. So if you are going for a popular costume for this year.. definitely the pirate costumes are the hot halloween costumes for 2006. Perhaps you could do the pirate costume with your own flair.. for example... you could buy just a few articles of pirate costumes and accessories and build your own.. in fact http://piratecostumes.ws has some ideas for a homemade pirate costume. If you are wanting to buy a unique halloween costume then you will probably want to just browse through the costumes at sites like http://onlinecostumestore.com

I have a few costumes that I have won prizes for:
One year I dressed as Elvira. I had a really sexy costume with major cleavage and breast inserts so mine were as big as hers! I did the make up just like hers and had the same exact wig as her.
One year I dressed as a super sexy FBI agent. I had an FBI hat, a skimpy leotard type outfit that said FBI on the back. I had cleavage and the bottom stopped right under my butt. I wore fishnets and 6 inch stripper shoes.
When I was younger I dressed as cat woman. My mom bought the pattern at a fabric store and made the costume herself.

I won a contest dressed as a pumpkin. Okay, so I was 11 at the time and my mom made the costume. But it was cool! She used some kind of wire and shaped it, and sewed the orange material onto it. She also made a green "stem" hat, and bought me green stockings. The contest was at a skating rink.

My son won a contest twice, also at a skating rink, one year as a mummy, one year as a teenage mutant ninja turtle. He was 3 yrs old and 4 yrs old, respectively.

I wasn't in a contest for this one, but one year I dressed in a grim reaper costume to answer the door to trick-or-treaters. It belonged to my then-husband, and was the only thing I had available to wear.

Oh wow! I won a trophy once when I was 12 with my Mother Goose costume.
My mom made it for me. We had a body of styrofoam left over from a new tv box. We covered it with a sheet and added an apron. Mom made wings out of white posterboard and orange webbed feet that laced into my regular shoes.
She made an orange beak out of cardboard and taped it to a surgeon's mask. Finally, we added a feather duster for a tail and a bonnet on my head.
I have to admit, that was a pretty darn good costume!!!

Back in high school, I dressed up as a bride who had been murdered on her wedding night. Jagged-cut white dress borrowed from another costume, a length of lace for a veil, ghost face makeup, fake blood and skin to simulate a throat-slash, and a bouquet.

I then re-used the dress and lace the next year and dressed up as a fallen angel (bruise makeup, NO halo or wings, wrapped the lace around my leg and foot to form a cast and borrowed some crutches).

I won prizes at parties three times..

First I was a French Aristocrat from the 1700's in a golden brocade suit and powdered wig.

The second was as Charley's Aunt in a 120" hoopskirt, butterfly curls, feathered bonnet and string purse.

The third I won as Little Lord Fauntleroy in a LLF suit with golden curls.

This was a really fun idea if anyone wants to borrow it. Back in our single college days there was four of us gals that wore a "collective costume". We were the "The Four Out of Five Dentist's That Recommend Trident for Your Chewing Pleasure." We wore long white lab coats and we had each made a name tag with our picture on it and a name that was a dental pun. Example: mine was "Dr T. Ruth Canal". We stuffed our pockets with pieces of Trident gum and passed them out to everyone at the Dance. Everybody (mostly meaning the guys of course) seemed to get a really big kick out of it. We all had a lot of fun. It was great.

I had a friend go as an electricuted electrician. She won a prize. It was pretty easy too. She just got a work shirt, painted PG&E on the back and burnt holes in one arm. Then she tore the toe off of a boot and painted her toes black. Then she spiked up her hair and sprayed it black. It was a pretty wicked costume and it won tons of prizes.
