To all the haters out there who attack and bash each other just because they are a Liberal or a Conservative/Democrat or Republican, do you think that if one side doesn't exist then this country(U.S.A) or any country would turn into a dictatorship or a totalitarian government?
to·tal·i·tar·i·an ( P ) Pronunciation Key (t-tl-târ-n)
adj.
Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: “A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul” (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.).

I have to agree that each party keeps the other in check, but thats more the natural result of human nature taking part in a truly free democracy. Totalitarianism is achieved through brute force, in every society there are tendencies among individuals to lean "left" or "right", which is why dictatorships are known and despised for the elimination of their opponents/critics. The partisan bashing in the US ranges from healthy debate to lunatic fringe fanaticism, but the fact that it exists is a tribute to the true freedom of speech we all are fortunate enough to enjoy, (see China).

I think your are correct to an extent.
Liberals are the worst bashers, they bash with feel good instead of real facts, seldom does the truth align with their postition.... unless it receives a little warping and gift wrapping to make it palatable to the public.
Most Republicans ARE NOT conservatives, they are liberals, less than half, way less, are even close to being conservatives, I don't know where a real conservative can be found.
Most Democrats are liberals, too many are leftist liberals, yet there are a few who have a conservative vein in their makeup.
Liberals of today are not even close to what constituted a liberal of a hundred or a thousand years ago. Today's liberals are too ready to spend other people's money on programs that do not work, they think throwing other people's money at problems is a solution... if it doesn't work... throw more of the people's money at it. The liberal's elitist ones know what is best for the public.
I wish there were some real conservatives to talk about.... there just aren't. Don't call GW a conservative, he can't seem to cross the center line into the right lane more than once a year. Being a Christian does not make him conservative, nor does it make him far right.

Well...not really. I personally don't feel that a liberal-leaning party can become fascist unless they warp into conservatives. See, I don't really see how your government is a dictatorship or a fascist state when they give you your rights, rather than take them away because they've made moral judgements for you, or because its 'for your safety.'
Some people might be unhappy if there were only liberal nominees, but then again, their unhappiness is moot compared to the unhappiness of those who's views are unable to be expressed under a conservative regime. A conservative under liberal rule can look away, not participate, etc. A liberal government gives you that option. A conservative one, however, forces you to tow the line and believe what they believe, even if it means 'giving up' (or rather being forced to hand over) what should be your rights, if people used logic.
Of course, if the Republicans went away, another party would inevitably come up to replace them with modified views to fit the times, but that would more or less still seem very "Republican." As long as we stay a Democracy, all opinions and sides, no matter how backward, will be able to get into office and enforce things as they see fit. That's why there are so many little parties out there, like the Green Party. People formed that party under their own ideals.

I am a Conservative Republican who once in a great while (very few and far between) agrees with the Democrats and not my party.
I believe the checks and balances are good to some extent.
We have almost crossed the line where that is good for the country. I believe that liberals are so busy fighting conservatives that they have lost sight that the war on terror is being fought for them too. They want to defeat Republicans more than the terrorists.

If only one side Lib.. Or Conser.... was to rule the entire country... Of course our society would turn into a one man show. We were almost there before in the past... People had to fight there behinds off to untangle the mess a one sided government created!

Even with a one party state as I believe you are implying, I don't think that with all the years of freedom we have had that the ruling party would be able to create a totalitarian state as defined above.

Being free to have you're own view and beliefs is what makes this country great. Unfortunately, there is no way to regulate people respecting other peoples views without limiting their rights.
If it is your right to belive in a conservitave manor, it is also your right to dislike anything opposing it. Most people show dislike by disrespect.
AWESOME QUESTION!!!!

Also, here is a really eye-opening documentary about the Israel and US Media Propaganda of the Mideast Crisis. It's 1hr 19mins but is worth every second of it. It contains some graphic violence so don't watch it when your kids are around.

i think to say that you're affiliated w/one party is stupid. you're gonna have many different opinions and it doesn't' necessarily mean that you'll agree w/EVERY opinion in that party. very stupid to think that you could sum all of your views into one political party.
geez that was very off the subject huh? ummm to answer your question...yes. that would equal to a totalitarian society.
