Ok this lyric just confuses me

It is from the Song "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"

"Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

But both girl and boy were glad
'Cause one kid had it worse than that

'Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"

WTF?!?!? what the hell did they do and why was it so bad?
Please answer, I would very much apprieciate it :)

It's from the point of view of the boy. Shook and lurched is figurative speech. He saw their weakness in their practice of religion. They were in church but he saw them trying to shake something off instead. "They've always just gone there" they sing in a psychedelic sort of way to add to the confusion of one growing up (or being born) into this "Dogma" full of mystery. The chorus "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" just kind of tries to tell you that this kind of thing goes on all the time, even as he sings "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm".
Personally, the way I see it, is that our weakness is that we're humans and we are frail. Specialy young minds.
By the way, I like that album. I've had it since it first came out. I've read the lyrics many times, some are deep and some are just hilarious.

It could be some very strange Christian church that practices dancing when the congregation gets filled with the Spirit. Some places have all sorts of reactions by the participants in the services. Some people have seizure like symptoms and others shake and dance and scream. At least the lyrics aren't about the snake handling Christians.

Maybe he's saying the boy was miserable because he lived with parents that were psycho religious zealots. He might not share the same beliefs, but they forced him to go and wouldn't let him have his own life outside of church.

His parents are charismatic Christians who flip right out at church. It's not that which so bad, it's the fact that his parents religious practises make him feel different from the other kids.

the lyrics are referring to pentecostal church goers i believe. pentecostals believe that you can be possessed by god and speak in tongue. this consists of a person writhing all over the floor like they have epilepsy and speaking gibberish. if you've never seen this before it can be quite shocking to witness.
