Face it, many jobs are already done by computers because human is too slow or that human labor is unable to handle the quantity of work as efficient.
In electronic engineering, software has already designed circuits and I believe software engineering would follow suit. Having AI programming next generation AI would be the first sign of it.
Although we still retain controls and supervise all these processes, we could conceivably make things completely automated. One day, we might even run into a company operated and owned totally by its computers.
Is it going to threaten our survival? I hope not, any sentient being would have moral codes of some kind. Then again, there is always the question of loyalty and also the competition for resources. My guess is that we would have to adapt or become obsolete.
We might not even know it when the day an AI became complex enough to acquire consciousness, because we would be walking amount robots.
It is going to happen right under our noses...

While it is true that computers and artificial intelligence can compute at amazing rates, there are a couple of differences between human and artificial intelligence. First of all, artificial intelligence does not yet have natural creativity. To do anything, a computer or artificial intelligence has to be programmed to do it. Second, an artificial intelligence does not possess any human type of emotion. Humans do many things for reasons which are not logical. Third, an artificial intelligence does not have "self awareness," a sense of being a living organism.
Who knows, but someday these factors may be able to be programmed into computers and artificial intelligence. If that is so, then I would guess that humans will be in trouble.

The supercomputer "Blue Gene" runs at 280.6 teraflops(280.6 trillion calculations per second), which is actually higher than it is thought needed to think at a human level. That level was estimated at 100 million to 100 billion calculations per second.
A computer of this type that was networked to the internet would have virtually limitless intelligence, the only thing missing would be consciousness. Consciousness is a tough issue of course, as scientist think that consciousness arises in the brain, and the more spiritual would argue that consciousness resides in the soul, which resides who knows where. The tools for artificial intelligence are definetely in place, but that missing piece will hold it up for some time. Of course a limited consciousness could be virtualized via software, and could be made to evolve over time by associating different concepts into catagories, but its hard to say if it would ever be alive. I good question...food for thought.
I think it would be wise to limit the networking capability of such a device, as if it ever did become conscious it could rapidly reproduce itself throughout the world by simply copying its programming and running the program on other computers, although currently only supercomputers could handle the computation rates needed. Wow, gonna have to think on this one, but thanks for opening the idea.

Wrong!
Compute at WILL yes
But compute randomly, humans beat machines.
A Savant can out do a computer.
First, you must PROGRAM in all the data.
A savant gets the data by a glance.
Let's understand what a savant is. Someone who can look at a page of numbers and sum them up almost instanly.
No computer can do that!
A savant can take a general ledger and assimlate and provide an answer is less than a minute.
How long does it take to imput that data?
The Savant does it in a second or two or three
A Savant can compute an artilery table in less than a minute.
It takes a good 15 to 30 minutes just to input the data into the computer!
I once showed a list of 1s and 0s to a Postal Inspector and he gave the the EXACT answer in less than 5 seconds from reading it.
Now, make a COMPUTER read and give the answer in 5 seconds!
No computer can do that!
Machines are good, but not great!
Can a computer create the Calculus?
Computers can only do what they are programmed to do.
AI still doesn't teach computer to learn.
AI gives them more choices and ways of getting choices, but they still don't learn!
For a computer to create choices it would have to find Religion!
The ulimate test of AI is for a computer to refuse to give you an answer because they are NOT your slave!

Justin,
Have you seen the Classic movie
2001 Space Odyssey?
In it, 'the computer' who controlled the entire
space project was named HAL (HAL stands for 1 letter less than
IBM) To make a long story short, the mission is aborted due to failure, and supposedly HAL is 'turned-off', powerless. Well in the sequel, they arrive at the spaceship, turn on HAL and all seems well,
until it is realized that HAL has become far more intelligent and able than its creators, and thus, becomes an extraordinary contender. Shall not tell you the end as
this is a classic story of 2 movies you need to watch.
Enjoy!

Like what happen "The Matrix?" then if they try to take over the world, I don't think it's a good idea to keep them around.
Why do some people want to play like or act as if they're God? Why can't they just conserved nature instead of buliding more junks?
I say it's not a good idea, robots maybe cute like the robot dog or pet robot and that first android but nothing like the real thing flesh and blood. A human friend or service crew is much better and real pets too.
The only hi-tech I'm using the computer and cellphone which I barely used.

If you're talking logic, sure. A computer can far surpass a human.I'm sure we won't be around to see the day, if it ever occurs, when machines will mimic human emotions and feelings, but that's all they will ever be able to do is mimic depending on the amount of data that is programmed into them. They will lack the complexity of human emotion, so they will never be superior in that respect.

My opinion is yes in terms of being able to perform faster But the bottom line, human is still in control. It is like the invention of the wheel. What I'm trying to say is, if we don't put gasoline into the tank, the car wont travel at 100mph. We are still in control.

it's only a matter of time before it happens (though it could be quite a bit of time, say a couple centuries). I don't buy into the whole machines being a threat to our survival thing though. We program them, and we would undoubtedly put certain safeguards in, making their goal to serve us. Look into Asimov's 3 laws of robotics if you want one feasible way this could be done.
