Personally, I think there is only ONE race, Human. Breakdowns by language group, religion, skin color, or whatever, are basically an act of laziness. It's just easier to judge people by association than to take the trouble to get to know them as individuals.

I think a lot of people (such as myself) are pretty good at not making assumptions about an entire race of people purely on the basis of the actions of one member of that race.
But you're right - most people don't seem to realise this. In a way, it makes sense -- psychologically, it's much more efficient to generalise on the basis of groups (like race, religion, gender, profession, etc) because it speeds up the way you deal with the world around you. The trade-off though is accuracy -- your generalisations aren't always correct.
I think you're doing the right thing by being aware of this issue and making sure that you treat people on the basis of their individual qualities. So keep doing what you're doing, and you'll be a great role-model for others! :o)

It's kind of like the common statements like: "All men are jerks"... Not all men are jerks just some of the ones that we have been lucky enough to have been in contact with. Same thing goes for races, people tend to judge an entire race because of their dealings with just one person. It's not everyone that does this, just very small minded people.

i totally think ur right. but what people dont realize is that sometimes the assumptions that they make about a specific group can hurt... a lot. i mean try being on the recieving end of a very hurtful racial slur. it hurts inside that people will assume things by just looking at u.

I agree. The big reason for this is ignorance and narrow-mindedness and it's an unfortunate human behavior.
