The short answer.
Hezbollah terrorists operating autonomously in southern lebanon crossed the border and kidnapped 2 israeli soldiers. Israel has lived for years with the possibility of rockets being fired into northern israel. After the kidnapping, israel had enough and decided to attack the hezbollah organization. They want a buffer zone all over southern lebanon so that hezbolah can not keep lobbing rockets into nothern israel.

Maybe reading the newspaper can help. But, if you don't have access to a newspaper, go on the web. Fox news is very good sources. Israel is at war with Hezolah, which occupies Lebanon. Hezobolah has been aiming missiles at Israel and kidnapped 2 Israelean soldiers. If the cease fire is accepted on both sides Israel will withdraw military from Lebanon.

Two hot-headed countries pissed off at eachother for reasons that baffle the world, and both are killed dozens...no hundreds in each country. I'm Lebanese and my uncle was killed in Beirut :(.
