There's a number in the front of your telephone book. It's: "National No-Call List", (1-888-382-1222). Call and register your phone number. Your # will be removed. Then, within a week, if a tele-marketer calls you, just ask them this question. "May I have your address and phone number please? They'll know exactly what you're doing and they'll hang up. They will be fined up to five thousand dollars for calling after you have registered your phone number, to be removed from this list. This is, if they give you their address and phone number, which their not going to do. I removed my number and have not received a call since. This has been 7 or 8 months ago. IT WORKS, THANK GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!! (WOW, I READ ALL YOUR ANSWERS AND YOU SHOULD HAVE IT RIGHT.) The answer that said she use to work as a collector and it is impolite for you to do anything. Well, they are VERY impolite and rude, when they call at dinner time or you're trying to get ready to go somewhere and are late anyway. They never ask, if you are busy or if you can talk to them, they just start blabbering the speech they have a copy of. "Oh", and no they will not take your number off their calling list if you ask them politely. I've done that many, many, many, many, times and it don't work.

I personally have the delightful job of being a telemarketer. Believe me, we don't enjoy calling you. Luckily, I only do phone surveys, and don't have the pleasure of trying to sell stuff. I would much rather have someone hang up on me, or just tell me they are not interested than scream at me for 15 minutes about how horrible of a person I am. Most of us are just college students or single parents trying to get by. Another great way to get us off the phone is to say someone has just called you. That way we automatically take you out of our systems.

There are several things, that when combined will almost eliminate these calls. Keep a notebook by the phone. If it is a real person who calls, tell them to put you on a "no call" list. Then log the date and time, and if you can, the name of the person you gave the request to. Legally, they are supposed to leave you alone, if they call again, report them and they will be fined. So the info is good to have handy. For computer based calls, there is a device that is installed on the phone that when it receives a call, you answer, This device will produce a beep, when it is transmitted, it will block any more calls generated from that company. The only drawback to it, is that if someone you know is using a computer to call you. It will block them also. So once you answer them, your phone will recognize that it is from a computer and block them every time after that.

Probably the best way to do this is to keep then from calling you at all. Go to www.donotcall.gov and add your number(s) to the list.

Once you are added to the registry telemarketers can not call you without facing the possibility of being charged with fraud.

In the meantime, just say "no thank you" and hang up. Believe me, they're used to it : )

Good luck!

I just did this 5 minutes ago; as soon as I saw it was a telemarketer I took the phone to another room, put it on speaker phone, and let them listen to the wonderful music on the radio! It ties them up so they can't bother anyone else. :-) I'm going to start doing this every time!! I'm going to leave them on the line until 9:00 p.m., they can't call back after that time!

I deal with telemarketers and bill collectors all day long where I work......Im a in home child daycare provider who takes care of two kids and really dont have the time to be dealing with these people on the phone.

What i do is let the answering machine get it and that way I dont have to deal with them and they can leave their message for someone to hear and listen to later.

So, in saying that I guess I would say let your answering machine if you have one pick up the calls so you dont have to deal with them at all.

Ever since I switched from a land line to VOIP I have not received one single telemarketing call. Not one. It has been about 8 months now and it is pure heaven. I am guessing that they cannot find me because my number is not listed anywhere.

Then you will never be successful. #1 understand that it is their job. And I'm sure it is not fun. But they are trained to pursue you for as long as you let them talk to you. Being polite is the same as letting someone into your home.

The best response that works everytime, is simply interrupt them and say "Thank you, I'm not interested...(click as you hang up the phone).

That's it. Hang up the phone. And don't feel guilty. They aren't worrying about it, they are already three calls down the road after you hang up. It's their job....it's only as personal as you make it.

Well I use to be a collector and hanging up or blowing a whistle in the phone is definitely not polite or even nice. Just politely tell them to take your number of the call list and please don't call again or you can tell them your not interested. If you get one of those people who are persistent........ then hang up in their face.
