OH YES!!!
That is really a great suggestion.
That will bring these overpaid footballer back to earth.
I personally was a great fan of football and went regulary into the the stadions but left it all because exactly of this reason.
The money I save for the tickets I give to a charity.
I totally agree and hope that one of these big bosses will read it too.

I think that they should set a salary cap, not for players, but for a team. Maybe 150000 for a team. The club can hav a highly paid player but other players should be from average paid players. This will be fair for those small clubs. If not those football clubs can NEVER win a major league.
They can get such high paid because there is increase in the number of fans, so the broadcasts, sponsors also earn more money n they can pay more to the clubs. The clubs also earn from tickets, jerseys etc. But chealsea is an exception, rich bcoz of the boss.

not gonna work, because the problem with incentive based-pay in a game like soccer is that it is very difficult for one player other than the keeper to influence the outcome of the game. and i don't think that everyone should lose money because one of their teammates messed up, that doesn't make sense. and why should the team or league get to regulate how much a sponsor pays for endorsements? this is all beside the point because no one in the current system has any reason to push for such a switch. and of course you are penalizing good players on bad teams. i don't think it would make the game any more interesting either. personally, i thik that the pay scale is out of hand, but i don't have a huge problem with it. if you do, you should just stop supporting the system that pays such high salaries. and also, in your system, presumably the owners would get all the extra money, because there is no way they would lower ticket prices very much, and i'm no happier having the owners get so much more money, than i am with the players getting it

I know I am in a minority here but I think you are wrong!
Whatever profession you are in, you are entitled to maximise your earnings. Athletes are not doing anything illegal to earn that kind of money, they can be seriously injured at any time which may result in their career ending early and loss of earnings and their career doesn't last the normal retirement age (most footballers if lucky will play until 35 years old).
I can't understand why people complain about how much footballers get paid, it often sounds like sour grapes as the average person would never make that kind of money even if they are doing something deemed more important like a Doctor, yes I agree they do get paid a lot but thats life!...yes I do see the point when you look at some players who are underperforming, constantly rule breaking, are a bad example to children and letting the team down but to judge exactly how much footballers should get paid is not something we should look at changing.
The large pots of money sitting there in the clubs are generated from the premiership/champions league and obviously merchandise/tickets etc and this needs to get filtered down to the players who are busting their gut (or not!) every week. There are plenty of fat cats sitting in on Boards collecting fat cheques who would only get a fatter slice of the pie if the money didn't go to the actual players so personally I would prefer it to go to my favourite player, or the one that scores vital goals, the guy that broke his leg last season to save a goal etc.
You can argue that season tickets, new home & away kits and various merchandise are a rip off for the fans but only if you are the one that is paying into the football club & disgruntled in your team's performance. Even so you have to check yourself for your expensive hobby - Its not a government tax like say council tax that you are obliged to pay or you get penalised, its your choice to follow a team & support it financially so if you can't afford it or think its a waste of money then don't subscribe to it.
Your idea for financial penalties you suggest for yellow and red cards seem reasonable (but based on the average footballer's wages the amount, should be much more and in line with bonuses) and as for sponsorships well this is the players money made outside the club and is determined by the sponsors themselves normally by how much advertising revenue they estimate they will make on the player - so yes its the fan or consumer that may buy the Nike shirt, gillette razor or whatever because the fooballer was advertising but they were not held at ransom to do so!

You have thought through a neat system, a system that tries to control what clubs do by rules. All they will do, in order to attract the players they want, is give fringe benefits, non monetray bonuses... Just like many companies do.
This would not solve the issue you are trying to address.
Why do you think footballers get paid so much? Where do you think the money comes from - apart in cases of clubs like Chelsea, Portsmouth... ... ?
It comes from us the fans. We buy tickets that go partially to the salaries of the players, we buy jerseys, we buy products associated with the clubs, and especially, we watch football games on TV and are influenced to buy products of the sponsors.
The huge increase and salaries came about when the TV rights were up for grabs. TV companies can pay huge sums because they think they can sell the advertising timeslots and make a profit out of it. The advertising time slots are that expensive because of the number of people who watch and are influenced to buy.
As long as we do not signal what we feel, nothing will change. We should stop buying jerseys, stop giving preference to products of sponsors, products of advertisers... Once the links between the team and our purchases is loosened, footballers wages will fall.
However, we can do even better by buying stuff from clubs/sponsors when the team performs; the better they perform, the more we buy. Directly link performance -as we measure it - to money.

I think that if you have trouble with the wages why do YOU pay them that much. Do you buy tickets, jerseys, sock, athletic supporters, and other licensed and sponsored products. You aren't a fan, you are the problem.
If a guy can make a billion a minute, I have no objection, as long as I am free to not be swindled, and it doesn't come out of my taxes. Neither case is true around here.
I do have problems with FANS who think some worshiped sports idle is being paid too much. Stay home one or two games a season. Good grief...

Complete rubbish! If the money doesn't go to players, where will it go? There's already enough going out to agents and lawyers and other sundry parasites, we shouldn't want even more!
Someone has to get all the money that is generated by football and the fact that players now get a large proportion of it-compared with the old days when they got a pittance- is a GOOD thing.

i think its ridiculous how much ALL athletes get paid, no matter what their sport it. i mean, i understand that they are entertaining people, but come on...a doctor who saves a life gets paid less than a guy who kicks a ball into a net!!?? its crazy!! granted that the amount of money you earn should refect your talent...but youre right, its ridiculous to earn millions just cause youre a good football player.
but dont get me wrong....i LOVE LOVE LOVE football.
