an IP number or address is talking about the location you are connected at, like my current IP address would tell anyone that I am in Venezuela, and maybe even as specific down to the street address (it's the way people can track hackers... bad hackers who can't cover their tracks), just think of it as a street address in the virtual world for your computer. Hope that made it simple enough for you.

An IP address is a 4-tuple of numbers between 0 and 255. Every 4-tuple is necessarily unique, within a given address domain.

Your computer does not need to know about every other device in the world, and the rest of the work does not need to know about the nodes in your network. A router connects different networks, and performs necessary routing between them.

There is a lot to this subject,I will refer you to howstuffworks.

Wikipedia says: An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number that devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network

I say: It's like your street address. It identifies your computer on a local network or on the internet.
